How to Choose the Best Car Audio Speakers

Your car audio sucks. There, we said it. That may sound harsh, but so does the music that’s blasting out of your factory speakers. Even if your car was advertised as having “premium” sound, that doesn’t really mean much unless you’re driving a Bentley Mulsanne with a Naim audio system. If this describes you, we’re jealous. And you can stop reading here.

If you’re still with us, it’s safe to say you’re riding around with car audio speakers that are decent at best. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to improve the sound quality in your car without replacing the entire audio system. By installing a set of aftermarket speakers, you’ll notice a huge difference in musical clarity and tighter bass for an overall better listening experience.

How to choose the best car audio speakers

At JC Power Audio Shop, we have an extensive selection of aftermarket speakers from all the top names in the industry. With so many options, how are you supposed to choose the best ones for your car? We’re glad you asked. Simply walking in and selecting a set off the shelf probably won’t give you the sound you’re looking for. But if you keep a few important points in mind, you’ll be able to pick out the perfect set for your vehicle.

Match your speakers to your system

It’s critical to consider sensitivity when choosing new car audio speakers. If you have a low-powered car stereo (and you probably do if it was factory installed), a set of speakers with high sensitivity will be the best match. On the other hand, high-powered stereo systems perform better with lower sensitivity ratings.

Pay attention to power handling

Power handling lets you know how much power a speaker can handle. Really, the only thing you need to pay attention to here is the RMS rating. So, for example, a system rated at “2-50 watts RMS” will make a better match for your low-powered stereo than a system with a higher rating.

Consider your design options

You have two choices here: component and coaxial speakers.

In a component system, each speaker has its own driver dedicated to its own range of frequencies. These speakers are ideal for creating a fuller sound with pristine clarity. Typically, these speakers are the best of the best.
Coaxial speakers share a single driver, which means all frequencies originate from the same place. This makes coaxial speakers easier to install, but not quite as enjoyable to listen to.

Size matters

When it comes to choosing the best car audio speakers, size has a huge impact on what you hear. For example, 6 ½-inch speakers are the most popular because they can produce a range of low to high frequencies without sacrificing much clarity. The bigger you go, the more bass you’ll get, while smaller speakers are best for producing mid- to high-range frequencies.

Give them a listen

You wouldn’t buy a car without test-driving it first, so why would you purchase speakers before hearing how your favorite music sounds? The easiest way to do this is to visit our shop in San Diego. We have loads of options on display where you can compare the vocals, clarity, and detail of several different models side by side.
